Siokin Civicus Barsi-Giah: Home (Liberia)
I take responsibility of my movement; Dean Steven Edmond donates to my project
Six years and two months ago, in August of 2012, I headed to the Robert's International Airport. Families, friends and I, journeyed at most 35 minutes to Margibi County, outside of Monrovia. It was meant for my good and the good of all.
The journey was inspired by young man Bill Rogers. Bill has met me on Facebook around 2010/2011. I have posted several pictures of myself, ranging from personal, political and soccer. And I have made some comments on each of them. I was so focussed on my substitute career (soccer) like I did with politics. One of the comments was: "I want to play soccer and combine that with academic..I know one day I will do so and reach my zenith." This was the comment that may have requested Bill's attention. He got in contact with me and the episodes started.
I made it to USA in 2012. I have just led Amb Dew Mayson 's presidential campaign in 2011 and endorsed President George Manneh George Weah (Great MAN Walking) "Born to succeed" and Winston Tubman, both candidates at the time, in the presidential runoff election. That runoff almost saw us dead.
I arrived in Brussels and headed to Chicago and onwards to Austin Texas. The purpose of the journey was to be an academic athlete.
Both Bill and the soccer team coaches have never seen me played. I met Bill for the first time after three days in the USA. We started the process. The try out started. I was impressive. I was offered a four year academic athlete contract. I was asked to score 2.00 (c) average and perform well. Period.
I climbed the steps early morning, I ran around the zilker park. I studied in the library and at home. I went hungry many times. I had no family to turn to. I was in the midst of it all. But hey, I promised Bill, the team and the Dean, that I will make it and I will leave for my country (Liberia).
Few years later, I graduated with Magna cum laude from Huston Tillotson University School of Business and Technology. I made the NAIA men's all-star second team, won most offensive player award, National Character award, five academic awards at Huston Tillotson University and scored 10 goals in my first season. I made tremendous progress and I am the only Liberian to have done this well (maybe there are other unknown records).
I engaged my former university Dean and the university and the coaches every time. And that is through emails, social media and texts and calls. Relationship was built. I AM A PRODUCT OF NETWORKING!
I have been in and out of the United States of America about 8 different times. I founded a project "Let's go to college after high school". It inspires, motivates and adds values to destitute, athletes and academicians. I have been supportive of my country and country men, ever since I was listed in the book of success. I am grateful.
Over the years, I have got support from few colleagues and few people I don't know. Thank you guys for the support.
My Dean has been supportive and he visited me once. There's a magazine to that effect and there is a written documentary on me. I am taking that to Liberia.
While I am back in the USA visiting and networking, my former University Dean made a donation of almost 30 chairs and few desk. And he has promised more. I will ship them soon. If you want to contribute to the shipment, I will be glad. My mentorship program and other activities are on course.
Many thanks to Christian Karembu for collecting those materials and placing them in a warehouse in San Antonio. Thank you, Messi!
I am a Blessed Child.
